If you want air conditioning in more than one room but don’t want a row of condensers on the back of your house, a multi-split system is usually the answer.
What is a multi-split air conditioning system?
A multi-split connects two or more indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Each indoor unit has its own remote or controller, so the bedroom can sit at 20°C while the home office runs at 22°C. It’s a type of split system, so it can also run in reverse as an air-to-air heat pump for efficient heating.

That depends on the outdoor unit’s capacity and the number of connection ports it has. Many domestic multi-split units support between two and five indoor units. We size the outdoor unit to match the combined needs of the rooms, and we’ll tell you upfront if adding rooms later is possible.
Can you mix different indoor unit styles?
Yes. Most multi-split ranges let you combine wall-mounted units in bedrooms with a floor-standing console in a conservatory, or a ceiling cassette in an open-plan space, all on the same outdoor unit.
Running costs and energy efficiency
Modern multi-splits use inverter compressors that vary their speed to match demand instead of switching on and off. Because each room is controlled separately, you only cool or heat the rooms you’re using. That zoning is one of the simplest ways to keep running costs down.

Can one room heat while another cools on a multi-split?
Not on a standard multi-split. All the indoor units share the outdoor unit, so they run in the same mode at any one time, although each room can have its own temperature.
Can I add another indoor unit later?
Only if the outdoor unit has a spare connection and enough capacity. If you think you may want more rooms in future, tell us at survey so we can size for it.
Is a multi-split cheaper than separate systems?
Not always. The outdoor unit and pipework can be more involved, but you save on outdoor units and wall space. We’ll price both options if it’s close.
Are multi-split systems noisy?
No. The indoor units are as quiet as single-split units, and modern inverter outdoor units run quietly at part load.
