Manchester isn’t known for its heat, but UK summers have brought more frequent hot spells, and modern homes, with their extensions, loft conversions and big glazed doors, can trap a surprising amount of it.

Is home air conditioning worth it in Manchester?

For many households it is, and not just for the hottest week of the year. The main reasons our customers give are:

  • Better sleep in bedrooms that stay warm long after the sun goes down
  • Working from home in a spare room or loft office that overheats in the afternoon
  • Usable living space in conservatories and extensions that are too hot in summer and too cold in winter
  • Efficient heating in the cooler months, as most systems we install work as heat pumps

Can air conditioning heat your home too?

Yes. A modern split system is an air-to-air heat pump: in heating mode it moves heat from the outside air into your room. Because it moves heat rather than generating it, it can deliver several kilowatts of heat for every kilowatt of electricity it uses, far more efficient than plug-in electric heaters. It’s a practical way to warm rooms the central heating doesn’t reach well.

How quiet is home air conditioning?

The noisy part, the compressor, sits in the outdoor unit. Indoor units on many modern models run as quietly as around 20 decibels on their lowest fan speed, close to a whisper, and most have a dedicated night or sleep mode. That’s why bedrooms are our most requested room.

Bedroom units are positioned so air flows across the room, not straight onto the bed.

What does home air conditioning cost to run?

Running costs depend on the size of the room, how often you use it, your settings and your electricity tariff. Inverter systems adjust their output rather than switching on and off, and higher efficiency ratings (SEER for cooling and SCOP for heating) mean lower bills. Our blog explains how to estimate and reduce running costs.

Do you need permission to install air conditioning at home?

Many domestic installations don’t need a planning application, but it depends on where the outdoor unit goes, its size and noise level, and the type of property. Extra care is needed if you:

  • Live in a listed building or a conservation area
  • Live in a flat or leasehold property, where you’ll usually need the freeholder’s consent
  • Rent your home, where you’ll need your landlord’s permission

We’ll point out anything that needs checking during your survey.

What to expect on installation day

A single-room installation is usually finished in a day. We protect your floors and furniture, drill one neat hole for the pipework, fit and connect both units, then test and commission the system. Before we leave, we’ll show you the remote, timers and how to clean the filters. If you want several rooms done, ask us about multi-split systems, and see our installation guide for more detail on the process.

Questions & answers

Home air conditioning questions

Is fixed air conditioning better than a portable unit?

For regular use, yes. Portable units vent hot air through a hose in an open window, are noisy because the compressor is in the room, and use more energy for less cooling. A split system is quieter, more efficient and can also heat.

Will air conditioning dry out the air in my home?

Air conditioning removes some moisture when cooling, which most people find more comfortable in humid weather. Correct sizing and sensible settings avoid the air feeling too dry.

Can I control my air conditioning from my phone?

Many modern systems offer Wi-Fi control as standard or as an add-on, so you can switch on and adjust the temperature remotely.

Can you install air conditioning in a flat?

Often, yes. The main considerations are where the outdoor unit can go and getting permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We can help you with the technical details they’ll ask for.
